Forgot to add: NYS passes Sanctuary State Law, but Gov hasn't signed it yet:

I just wrote to Hochul asking to oppose this. Also wrote to Schumer, Gillibrand and my US congressperson about gender affirming care overall asking them to look a the research and decisions from Europe. I told them they won't have my vote until they restore sanity and put in place more sane policies. Probably will have a a tiny impact, hope it lands somewhere.

Good for you, though Hochul is gung ho on all this ideology! I may write her also and ask her if she cares about women who have the most to lose.

are you in NY? I'm horrified by what's going on in California- if this happens in NY state i'm full on organizing. I had 2 trans babysitters for my kids during the pandemic, until last year I figured the trans community knew better what they needed than I did, and I didn't get involved, until I started reading hundreds of pages of research, found Lisa's substack and others, and realized how far this had gone. and now it IS my business if they come for my child and my parental rights. HELL NO. I want to organize against this madness in NY. Who here is from NY?

Per the FP: A new California law—AB-957—that has passed the state senate judiciary committee and is heading to the state senate floor would take a child away if parents don’t “affirm” that child’s gender identity. The “affirmative care” model means that if a male child says they identify as a girl, the parent needs to bring the child to the doctor; the doctor’s job is to affirm what the child feels by offering every medical tool available to get that child’s body to align with their inner gender feeling. If parents get in the way of this march, per the new California law, that would be considered child abuse. Again: if you don’t give your gender dysphoric child puberty blockers, that could soon be considered child abuse in California.

Expand full comment

This is truly a horrifying law and I did not realize that NY was following suit. I Am a former New Yorker and I am very angry about all of this.

Expand full comment

Lisa, I scanned through this, but wasn’t certain: it doesn’t look like the statute goes so far s to involve parental abolition, that is, “protecting” a child who comes to NYS for these experimental interventions without parental consent?

Expand full comment

I hope not, but knowing the “progressive “ nature of New York State’s legislators, it wouldn’t surprise me if they went for all of it!

The term” gender affirming care” is Orwellian in and of itself. It makes the abuse sound so positive. Puberty blockers, hormones, amputations are all just so “ affirmative “ when in fact they are all body scarring.

Expand full comment

Absolutely. Orwellian language abounds, and it is not accidental.

Expand full comment

I agree! It’s language change to get power! All authoritarians know that!

Just the other day, Maryland Gov Moore issued an Executive Order forbidding doctors etc. in Maryland to comply with out of state subpoenas regarding the cancer drugs, opposite sex hormones (used for chemical castration of Alan Turing) and amputations. His statement called all that needed treatment "to affirm their humanity". Last month he signed law requiring Medicaid to cover the treatments so low income people would have equal access to the procedures.

BTW, the Meghan Kelly interview is indeed excellent. I did not appreciate her opening, however, for reasons I’ll explain, but Josie urged me to continue, and Kelly’s articulation of the issue with pronouns is good and a model of clarity.

On the opening, however, I would ask all here to be vigilant about, and push back, in lumping together same-sex attracted people with the rest of the alphabet soup. Pride no longer has anything whatever to do with the fight for legal rights and protections for those of us who are same-sex attracted. Indeed, gender identity activism is a very real threat to those who are gay and lesbian. For those who read Time to Think, you will be aware of the homophobia ingrained in the pseudo medical practices at Tavistock. Many will also have heard the expression, “transing away the gay.” It is real, and serious.

Kelly’s comment in her opening not only fails to recognize this, but also criticizes those of us who are gays and lesbians for the trans spectacle this has become, which is not our doing. Far from it. I cringe every time I see a flag, can’t wait for the month to be over, and wish the whole thing would become extinct. For an excellent, and often very funny, explainer, I highly recommend this conversation on “What is the point in pride?” between Julie Bindel and Douglas Murray. https://youtu.be/YysgbnBohhc

Andrew Doyle, a gay comedian and superb commenter on gender issues, also has a terrific piece here: https://www.spectator.co.uk/article/who-is-pride-really-for/

Thank you Susan. This new "Pride" has very little to do with the events I joyfully participated in when I was young, and newly coming out as a lesbian. I am horrified to be lumped in with all this.

Expand full comment

It’s really sad. It meant a lot to me when I was younger, too. So joyful, a chance to celebrate our lives together, to see that we were not alone, to take courage from one another. Now, like you, I feel only dismay and horror.

Thank you, Susan, for this. The discussion between Julie Bindel and Douglas Murray about the misogyny of gender identity activism is really important. This perspective is something I'm trying to share with lefty women friends, if they'll listen. Thanks for sharing.

I'm perhaps going to come off as nitpicking, but....

I appreciated the Murray-Bindel riffing. Very well done on both their parts.

I've always liked hearing from both of them. However, I must say that Bindel on at least one occasion strayed foolishly into the realm of male sexuality in a way that was simple-minded, unhelpful and, dare I say it, utterly clueless about what it's like to be a male, in a male body, under the constant (mostly great!) influence of testosterone.

So while I continue to appreciate Bindel's thoughtful critiques, I do hope in the future she'll refrain from making silly comments about something that she, as a lesbian, truly has no experience of.

Indeed I do, and I love that you picked up on that. This is me: https://prufrocksdilemma.wordpress.com/

Fair point. You may be amused to know that, after my straight male friend watched the video, we had quite an interesting, wide-ranging discussion about the differences in male and female sexuality. So many things neither of us had given a thought to before, and I am 74, he is pushing 80.

Expand full comment

I love hearing that! To me, discussion and conversation are the best way for us to learn about and gain understanding of each other. It doesn't have to be adversarial, though it seems many people today think it does. Kudos to you and your friend. Now I find myself wishing I'd been a fly on the wall; I like actual, non-leering conversations about the fascinatingly complex subject of human sexuality.

Expand full comment

Would be a huge improvement if people ceased being adversarial and just tried to articulate their viewpoint and understand those who had a different take.

Expand full comment

Well, here’s a little fly on the wall. It started with him making some intelligent, I would say, observations both Picasso’s relationships with women. In the course of that he wrote: “When men aren’t actively pursuing sex they’re thinking about it, fantacizing, it’s the way we are.”

To which I responded in very small part: “First off, amusingly, you are not the only male friend to allude to or state “it’s the way we are,” but I find all my male friends so pleasant and interesting to be around that I find myself unable to believe it and can only take it on faith! But then, but then, I recall certain things that make me realize there is a driving biological difference that is very likely immutable and, while there is a range, this makes a significant difference in more of how men and women relate to the world that we probably realize on a day to day basis.”

From there, we were off and running. I think it helped that this was all by email. In person I am sure we would have felt MUCH too awkward. We grow old, after all, and we wear our trousers rolled.

But do you dare to eat a peach? :)

It is amazing how hard it is to do that, isn’t it? My straight women friends give absolutely no credence to concerns I may have as a lesbian. With most, I can’t even open the door to that conversation, and instead have to hear all about the plight of poor trans people and all the trials and tribulations they face (even though they personally don’t know anyone in that category). On the brighter side, a straight man friend of mine wrote about the Bindel-Murray conversation: “This is the most delightful link you’ve sent me! funny, charming, and oh so articulate! not a syllable wasted— it illuminated so much, so economically. Julie Bindel is charismatic, such a centered person, and Douglas Murray supplied most, but far from all, of the laugh lines.” My straight women friends, in contrast, seem completely terrified of crossing a line.

Well this is upsetting and I CARE SUSAN! I looked up how much money the ACLU is giving lesbians and it’s less than 2%. Women have not gotten their turn, especially lesbians. Makes me so damn mad. I just met the 2nd most bad ass lawyer who is a lesbian and she took on title 9 like a friggin true American hero. Let’s not forget who took on feminism. We are all united or should be on this important issue. Some of the smartest women I know are taking this gender business down and protecting our girls and young women are lesbians! Don’t ever underestimate the power of smart women with cause.

I have to amend the above: only some straight women friends. I was reminded of this today having lunch with an old college chum I haven’t seen in a while. Though she was surprised at first when I bemoaned how awful “Pride” is, it took very little information for her to weigh in appropriately, and her questions were good, too. It was such a relief. Note to self: never sweep in a whole demographic just because you have some friends within it who remain clueless.

It’s actually really important to point this out to say what is your experience bc it’s YOUR experience and I’ve noticed the same...just bc trans is getting attention 24/7 also means there going to be a backlash of “family values” with the GOP. I just wanted to offer solidarity bc we are both women...you speak YOUR truth, you earned it. I found the Megyn Kelly rule of no preferred pronouns to be a bit self-serving. What about an older trans woman who’s put a lot of effort into passing...she’s (Megyn) not going to use manners now? That’s not a great example but what should we expect from any tv personality? I could say whatever I wanted too if I had hundreds of millions of dollars, Botox, filler a ft hairstylist and a makeup artist, millions to spend on clothes...oh I forgot I already do I don’t have a platform, fortunately for the world. She’s a talented woman and probably earned it idk. BUT this is shock factor tv...she is tone deaf and also WHY so much love for Tucker Carlson!?!🤮 Yuck. I’m just glad she has Dr. Grossman on. I watched the whole segment I felt like saying, Megyn...cut us moms some slack. Gawd it’s not our fault.

Susan I got so mad when Megyn Kelly explained what she would do if her kids came out as trans...cut off phones take a road trip, etc easy to say when you are worth hundreds of millions of dollars also it sounded like she was reprimanding parents.

But Dr. Miriam Grossman is my current hero she has true empathy for parents and doesn’t blame us. Love her. I can’t wait for her book to come out.

Also in different interview she said as a woman who’s family was in the Holocaust she’s learned to fight for what’s right she’s a woman with a mission. Brilliant

Time for yet another pile-on, this one re Michelle Goldberg's latest: https://www.nytimes.com/2023/06/16/opinion/conservatives-muslims-lgbtq.html

I have submitted this comment:

I hope Ms. Goldberg will at some point take time to listen in a fair-minded way to the concerns many of us on the left have about the impacts of “gender identity,” rather than continuing to push the narrative that this is an issue only for those on the right. I don’t share the right’s approach, nor do I trust their motives. I am therefore all the more concerned, as a Democrat, that my own party seems to be willfully blind to the harms. Here are a couple pointers: “LGBTQ” et al is not a coherent group. Indeed, many of us who are LGB feel force teamed with people whose issues are very different, and these days often in direct conflict with and harmful to, those of us who are same-sex attracted. Harms being done to women, girls, and LGB individuals in the name of extremist “gender identity” demands, particularly self-ID, are considerable and woefully under-recognized by left of center commentators and Democratic politicians. I hope Ms. Goldberg will, in future, help to bring better balance to this discussion.

I would NEVER be able to get any of my liberal or centrist friends and family to listen to anything Megyn Kelly says. Instead, they will take the fact that she said it as all the evidence they need that what she is saying isn’t correct. Indeed, for too many on the left, the fact that she, Tucker Carlson, Matt Walsh, Ben Shapiro, Marjorie Taylor Green, and most of the GOP says it is all the research they need to do to feel informed on this topic 😞

Pls discuss Oregon HB2002 and how the Republicans folded bc they got the abortion portion removed so they folded on the outrageous new pediatric gender bs law. It’s a lengthy and horrible bill that excludes parental rights and they will soon be outsourcing cross sex hormones at schools (already are doing that in Milwaukie, OR) and sending little hormones on wheels to every rural area in the state with NPs handing out testosterone like it’s the friggin flue vaccine. I’m so disappointed they (Republicans held off until the last minute and then true to form, they caved). The bill was going to be up for public vote in 2025 and the Oregon republicans...the Real Ed Diehl etc gave in. I will not forget who pretended they cared. Got all the accolades and then folded.

It wasn’t supposed to pass. When I found it did...it crushed my last remaining hope that politicians are anything but serving. They could have been on the right side of history in a bright Blue State.

How many times can we be disappointed with any elected official before the voters say ENOUGH we deserve parental rights the State should NOT be replacing parents.

I expected this from the Dem politicians but the Republicans are NOT examples of moral courage...they don’t do their homework all they care about is getting re-elected. I’m really devastated this bill got passed. They almost killed it and they (Republicans) chose to take a single win on pediatric abortion rights in a trade off and then called it a day.

They are probably all smoking Cuban cigars and having drinks over expensive scotch right now congratulating themselves that 10 year olds can’t get abortions without parental consent but they didn’t care enough about all the kids (young minor children) who will get state funded cross sex hormones, surgeries and puberty blockers without parental consent AND zero psych support. What is McKinnon saying in this quote? “Although there are detransitioned people who feel appreciative of their gender transition process in that it was an opportunity for self-discovery, care services must be able to recognise and hold therapeutic space for complex feelings such as regret and grief.” To go through such body altering changes was the impetus they needed for self-discovery? Isn’t that why many are pushing to go back to putting long exploratory therapy first vs affirmation. I wonder how many kids would be healthier if they had to wait.

Another news note: I’d be interested in any information anyone has on how Lupron came to be on this Medicare Part B list:

“The names of 43 Part B prescription drugs whose prices were raised more than the rate of inflation were released by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) on June 9, the second set of medications the agency has identified. Starting July 1, beneficiaries could pay less out of their pockets for this latest group of drugs than they would have before the new drug law.”

“Under the prescription drug provisions of the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act, drugmakers who raise their prices higher than the rate of inflation will have to pay a penalty, in the form of a rebate, to Medicare. The rebate will be the difference between what the price increase would have been if the manufacturer had stuck to the inflation rate for its increase and what the actual price hike was.”

Lupron is listed in the article as “Lupron Depot-PED: Treats central precocious puberty in children.”
