Last week, about seventeen minutes after engaging with one of the fiercest defenders of gender-affirming care/childhood and adolescent “sex” changes—who claims that everyone else is wrong—I decided to take Twitter off my phone. It’s been liberating, especially because I’ve been away from my computer most of the week, communing (in person!) with other disaffected liberals (and non-liberals) by way of Meghan Daum’s Chicago Unspeakeasy. It can be exhausting, and deflating, to keep up with the gender news because it’s more tennis match (Pong game?) than debate, and because so much of it is in bad faith—part rabbit hole, part sewage pit. Some people have told me that these extensive headline lists overwhelm them, making them feel we will volley forever, rather than ever make progress.
I can’t profess to any certainty about where we’re going. I just know there’s been a slight opening in the Overton window; we’ve got to keep pushing to widen it. More debate. More information. More nuance. More complexity. Don’t give up! And as you peruse these headlines, don’t ignore that some young people who identify as trans are being bullied and harassed, just as you won’t ignore the horror that some women have been raped in prison by trans-identified males. So many different populations are hurt by the politicization of this issue (obviously, some more than others)—and by one side refusing to see objections as anything but bigoted.
As we’ve moved toward what some call “inclusivity,” we’ve been asked, or forced, to change our language or hide our beliefs to honor those who don’t share them, in the process centering the marginal, marginalizing the normal. Destigmatize reality! Destigmatize the truth! These are bad bumper stickers, but important missions.
And now to headlines and summaries from our beloved Alejandra Q.
SUMMARIES
National
· Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry signed HB608 into law Wednesday. The new law, which will preclude trans-identified individuals from entering facilities based on their “gender identity’, will go into effect in August.
· A Burleigh County judge denied Wednesday a request to halt the enforcement of North Dakota’s law barring pediatric gender transition. The law, which was passed and signed during the last legislative session, will stand while the case goes to trial.
· 65 House Republicans aim to reverse Biden’s changes to Title IX which are expected to go into effect in August. The group of Republican legislators signed onto a disapproval resolution Wednesday. The leader of the joint resolution, Rep. Mary Miller, explained, “This divergence is a blatant violation of the protections Title IX was meant to guarantee, and it undermines the very foundation of women’s rights and security in their private spaces.”
· The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) claims to have documented “86 active anti-LGBTQ+ groups” as part of its ‘Year in Hate and Extremism’ report released Tuesday. This represents a 33% increase from last year’s report. Such increase is due to the decision to include state-based family policy councils and groups of doctors who stand against gender transition (including chapters of the group Gays Against Groomers along with Society for Evidence Based Gender Medicine and Genspect) on this year’s list.
· A new pilot program aimed at LGBTQ youth in the foster system was approved by the LA County Board of Supervisors Tuesday. Part of what LA Country describes as “life-saving resources for trans kids” include "resource closets" to provide free to clothes, shapewear and makeup for minors in the foster care system. According to the program’s supervisors, “ongoing efforts to tamp out gender affirming care nationwide highlight the need for resources to support gender identity and expression among particularly vulnerable populations.”
· Missouri’s Western District Court of Appeals ruled Tuesday that a former student of the Blue Springs School District in Missouri will receive more than $4 million in damages for discrimination. The former student, who identifies as a transgender man, was barred from using the school’s boy locker room as an adolescent.
· Arizona is now the first U.S. state to enact a detransitioner bill of rights. An Arizona Capitol Times article describes Arizona’s SB 1511, which it describes as guaranteeing “equality of care and coverage for overlooked, underserved people.”
· Cobalt Sovereign, a trans identified male student from Hopkins High School in Minnesota, was attacked in a girl’s school bathroom and left with a broken jaw on May 30th. The student accused of the attack has been disciplined, and police are now investigating the incident as a possible hate crime. Hundreds of students attended a rally in support of Sovereign, who was hospitalized 2 days following the attack.
· Tremaine "Tremayne" Deon Carroll, a trans-identified male inmate facing two charges of forcible rape plus one charge of "dissuading a witness from testifying," has now been transferred out of a California woman’s prison. On Jan. 30 a female prisoner claimed Carroll attacked her and raped her in the shower at the Central California Women’s Facility. There is a second victim also listed in the complaint. In an interview for Fox News, Lauren Bone, legal director of the Women's Liberation Front (WoLF) spoke about Carroll’s case and how it relates to California’s SB 132. In another California prison story, the National Review reports that the state’s prison policy that requires female prison guards to strip search trans-identified male individuals. According to the California Institution for Men policy adopted in 2021: “Incarcerated individuals who are transgender, non-binary, or intersex must be searched according to the gender designation of the institution where they are housed or based on the individual’s search preference.”
· For her Substack, Christina Buttons criticizes an editorial from the journal Nature that discusses existing research looking into the biological basis of trans identity. The opinion article argues that such research could potentially “harm” or “pathologize” individuals who identify as transgender. According to Nature: "Our aim is not to halt scientific enquiry. But when it comes to transgender identity, knowledge cannot be pursued in isolation from the many societal factors that shape how that knowledge is received and acted on."
· The "Take Back Title IX" tour, a nationwide bus tour comprised of female athletes and coaches from across the country, was in Lancaster County Pennsylvania Friday during the U.S. Women's Open. The group protested the potential participation of trans-identified male golfer, Hailey Davidson. The bus tour, which is part of the Our Bodies, Our Sports coalition, plans to make stops around the country throughout the month of June. A speaker with the tour is Paula Scanlan, Lia Thomas’ former University of Pennsylvania teammate.
· Soren Stark-Chessa, a trans-identified male sophomore at Maine Coast Waldorf School, won the 800-meter title at the Maine Principals’ Association Class C girls’ outdoor track and field state championship. Stark-Chessa, won the race 10.12 seconds faster than the runner-up after transitioning from boys’ sports as a freshman.

· Claire Southey, director of Rainbow Rights Watch, an Australian trans advocacy group, pursued legal action against The Herald Sun only to have the case dismissed by a court this week. The Herald Sun, a publication based in Melbourne, had reported in 2022 on a petition made by inmates from Dame Phyllis Frost Correctional Centre. The female inmates had requested that a trans-identified male inmate with a history of sexual violence be removed from the facility. According to Southey, the article uncritically and repeatedly described how the male inmate made others at the facility feel "unsafe," "threatened," and "traumatized". The tribunal concluded, however, that the article in question did not vilify transgender people as a group.
· Australian heiress Gina Rinehart has stood in favor of parents from St. Hilda’s Anglican School for Girls, an elite girls school in Perth, who have complained about the gender curriculum in the school. Rinehart is considered Australia’s richest person and attended St Hilda’s as a young student.
· UK prime minister Rishi Sunak has pledged to rewrite parts of the Equality Act if reelected. The new changes would define the term “sex” based on biology, blocking trans-identified males from entering female-only spaces and from participating in female sports. The 2010 Equality Act has been criticized for its ambiguity. For example, in reference to the Equality Act, Women and Equalities Minister Kemi Badenoch said the following: “Whether it is rapists being housed in women’s prisons, or instances of men playing in women’s sports where they have an unfair advantage, it is clear that public authorities and regulatory bodies are confused about what the law says on sex and gender and when to act – often for fear of being accused of transphobia, or not being inclusive.” The Sunday announcement was followed by controversy, including within the conservative Tory party. While The Spectator describes Badenoch’s intentions as “honorable,” it also highlights potential problems with her stance, including how the Equality Act “already regards biological sex as primary.” The same article also points to issues regarding the legal definition of ‘woman’ as it relates to the 2004 Gender Recognition Act. The article expounds on this topic: “That really is the issue here. Kemi Badenoch tried to bat the matter away saying that ‘it’s not about paperwork.’ She suggested the exclusion of transwomen would be done on the basis of appearance if they are ‘visibly of a different sex’ as she put it on Today. The problem here is that some transwomen look almost indistinguishable from women, especially if they have had genital surgery, while some women can to the untrained eye look very masculine.” A video of a heated exchange between GB News host Camilla Tominey and transgender campaigner Joanne Lockwood concerning the UK’s Equality Act was shared by multiple outlets. Kemi Badenoch was also interviewed by Sky News’s Kay Burley on the topic. In a separate interview with GB News, Tory MP Miriam Cates also elaborates on the repercussions of the proposed changes to the Equality Law.
· The Good Law Project, a British non-profit legal organization, and TransActual, a trans advocacy group, have joined forces to challenge the UK’s ban on puberty blockers. An emergency ban on puberty blockers was put in place by health secretary Victoria Atkins before last week’s dissolution of parliament so that healthcare providers who prescribe the drugs could face up to two years’ imprisonment. The current ban applies to England, Wales and Scotland.
· The Lancet issued its new researcher guidance on language for sex and gender. The document suggests the use of “sex assigned at birth” (over terms “biological sex”, “birth sex” or “natal sex”) among its recommendations. It also criticizes the notion of sex and gender as binary concepts, claiming that both exist on a spectrum. The guidance additionally describes the term “sex” as having two definitions, one that is physical/physiological, and one described as a categorization “designated at birth”. Jerry Coyne criticizes the new document, calling the publication the “most woke” of all medical journals. Coyne elaborates on his disapproval: “Note that everything referred to here deals with HUMANS, as this is a medical journal. Note that the editors specify that ‘sex’ has multiple definitions, but in so doing mix up the way sex is determined in humans (chromosomes carrying sex-determining genes), the way it is observed at birth (usually via genitalia), and the way it is defined (whether an individual has the apparatus for producing big, immobile gametes (‘females’) or small, mobile gametes (‘males’).”
· A new dating app, L C (for “Lesbian Community”), created by women’s rights campaigner Jenny Watson, was recently launched in the UK. The dating app will use A.I. technology to distinguish its user’s sex and plans to exclude trans identified males from its services. Critics believe the app’s A.I. technology “often misgenders women, especially people of color.”
· An article for The Telegraph describes how the book Time to Think was once dropped by Bloomsbury, one of Britain’s largest publishing houses. According to the article, Bloomsbury had originally been enthusiastic about the book but halted its publication based on complains from younger members of the staff. Robin Baird-Smith, the editor who initially promoted the book, was subsequently fired from Bloomsbury. Worth noting is that this happened before the book’s 2023 publication by Swift Press.
· The Scottish Government is accused of employing individuals affiliated with groups that have attempted to dismiss the findings of the Cass review with the purpose of setting up a new NHS gender service in Scotland. The Cass review prompted Scottish health boards to block the use of puberty blockers for gender dysphoric minors. Members of the National Gender Identity Healthcare Reference Group, however, established to “progress improvement in the provision of gender identity healthcare and to oversee the implementation of the commitments set out within the NHS Gender Identity Services Strategic Action Framework”, are accused of spreading misinformation on the Cass review. Trina Budge, director of For Women Scotland claims: "Members of this so-called healthcare group are being allowed to abuse their positions with attempts to rubbish the most comprehensive study of its kind ever carried out.”

Three documents, The CASS Review, Johns Hopkins Systematic Review for WPATH and the WPATH FILES need to be reviewed by educators and counselors promoting transgender services if they are actively encouraging students in school settings and in social services to be fully educated. All should be part of a larger curriculum for students and families to understand and discuss medical processes, as well as long-term impacts related to transitioning.” (Polk County Itemizer Observer)

Thank you, Lisa—and good for you taking a Twitter break. This is a take home point for me: “So many different populations are hurt by the politicization of this issue (obviously, some more than others)—and by one side refusing to see objections as anything but bigoted.” It is hard not to feel overwhelmed so, as a counterpoint, I thought I’d note two things from this week that I found incredibly moving and heartening. One was Corinna Cohn’s beautiful piece here: https://open.substack.com/pub/corinnacohn/p/death-before-detransition-yes?r=16541&utm_medium=ios (Cohn credits Lisa and Ben Appel for “early feedback and notes”.) The other was LGBT Courage Coalition’s report on the lovely little band of folks who attended the endocrine society meeting: https://open.substack.com/pub/lgbtcouragecoalition/p/endocrine-society-conference-boston?r=16541&utm_medium=ios
In response to the very problematic Jack Turban, I would absolutely love it if Margot Thomas (and Alan Alda, too, maybe on his podcast) would step up and be true to her groundbreaking Free to be You and Me album and demand that Turban and others stop co-opting it. How powerful and helpful would it be if she were to say that William and Atalanta would now be transed instead of being allowed to grow up to be gender non-conforming or even more inherently just to challenge regressive, gender stereotypes?
