Well, Kate, with your opening editorial, you have exceeded your already stellar standard of reporting--with big kudos to Alejandra for spotting that weird old article, amongst all your other finds! And your observation that humans are historically irrational, coupled with a link to “Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds” is top level. Thanks, too, for the mentions of the DEI book and the new one by Byrne, “Trouble with Gender.” Our bookshelf shall soon runneth over . . . 👏⭐️👏⭐️👏
Kate, maybe you have already mentioned it someplace, but would you ever consider writing about the personal and professional things that happened that led you to these waters? Also, totally different subject but does anyone know of any Facebook groups supporting parents going through the GI sorrows? I reached out anonymously on a private FB group for moms in my local area (North Potomac Maryland), about the public schools’ 7th grade sex ed and got smacked down so hard (I was extremely neutral in my query which was just questioning whether some stuff was age-appropriate) in the comments that I deleted my post within about one hour. I’m on the WhatsApp chat group for OurDuty (you have to get vetted, btw, if you are interested in joining--I had a video call about a year ago with a volunteer with the group to be granted access), so I could also ask there, I suppose. Thank you (and Alejandra Q!) for the at times hopeful but always informative reporting, Kate.
Yes, there's a pretty big general FB group, Love to Read, that someone on the OurDuty WhatsApp should be able to hook you up with. I'm not in it or I would! StoicMom interviewed me a couple of years ago, back when I was anonymous, if you'd like a little of my personal backstory. Not sure when/if I'll write about it: https://stoicmom.substack.com/p/the-deeply-meaningful-work-of-motherhood#details
Re the Canadian doctor who can't be honest with his idiot patient: What can I say, we've been long infected by the woke mental disease here too. I guess now medical malpractice is mandatory for the criminally self-obsessed. She shouldn't be allowed to sue him for it.
Thanks, Kate. I want to check out the book on evidence based diversity training. Good metaphor on the ocean. I feel the same and you’re a great swimmer. Love your writing!
A friend of mine who runs public medical services for transgender people warned me about pregancy risk when my daughter identified as a lesbian and then as a trans boy. She said that a lot of the females think because the other party identifies as a girl, they think they can't get pregnant and that pregnancy was surprisingly high among young lesbians.
It'll be interesting to see if the WPATH membership numbers increase in February due to late renewals. Renewal of membership happens each December/January.
Kate, thanks for mentioning my story. Lately, I reached out to a guy I have been following in the media here in Québec. He works for Radio-Canada (radio) and in his program, La Journée est encore jeune, he often wraps up “stupids quotes” from the trash radio hosts. Lately, he was ridiculing the rare smart quotes I have heard from Richard Martineau and Maxime Bernier and I contacted him to ask him why, with links to Lisa Littman and Hannah Barnes, and also Kathleen Stock. Quotes were that the “trans ideology is the new homophobia” and that “gender dysphoria is contagious”.
He replied back with articles from trans activists denying my sources and he said he preferred to follow the science. I was shocked. I guess it makes it really scary for us now. My son needs therapy for self esteem issues and I am scared to even look for it now, he has long hairs, will they ask him...
I'm sorry to hear this, Emilie. It's very hard for people to understand they may be embracing garbage science--true for trans activists, true for extremist anti-vaxxers...the list is endless. I'm sorry I don't know your back story: are you worried about someone suggesting to your son that his self-esteem problems might be because he's trans?
We have a program in the local university looking for kids to practice their therapy. I think it's for the master's degree psychology program. There is a girl from my improv class studying there and they are looking for kids for a 10-session commitment. At first, I thought it was great because there is a therapist shortage and my son (he's 10) has issues regarding integration with other kids, self-esteem and he has very long hair because he likes heavy metal music and all his idols have long hair. He has been called a girl a lot and we managed it quite well, but I wouldn't like the new therapist to have gender questions in their basic introductory assessment.
I was about to ask the improv friend and then, for the first time in my life, I had to think twice because I didn't want to end up leaving my improv class because of this kind of issue (being seen as an enemy of some sort, I wouldn't fight back). There are a few gender confused kids in the local improv scene and those people really are on the "right side" of this debate. Now I am reconsidering his participation if they ever choose him. Not sure I am super clear but ask if not.
Don't do it. I had a child with serious emotional disorders and I got screwed with therapists in all sorts of ways that damaged my child and our relationship. I even wanted to be a therapist once. I also work extensively with kids. Keep your kid out of therapy. I know how that sounds but these folks aren't properly trained to work with kids.

Thank you for always being so encouraging, Sue, and for your always excellent tips. Really appreciate it!
I’ll echo Susan’s comment: well done, Kate! You always offer intriguing content, beautifully written. Many thanks.

Stella O'Malley, the therapist from Gender a Wider Lens would say the same.
