Not tonight dear. It's ACE week.

The English teacher says my favourite phrase, ‘How can you be born that way if gender is a social construct?’ End of conversation. Sex is binary and immutable.

Very witty, Kare. Thank you for the laughs. 👏

Following that “ace” link, I came across the statement “This space is ace-inclusive.” Which got me thinking, what would make a space seem *exclusive* of those who identify as asexual? I mean other than, say, an actual orgy, under what circumstance would this even come up?

As a youth culture observer, my educated guess is that an ace person would consider a space ace-exclusive if the people present do not encourage them to regularly share how very hard it is to be an ace person...

Back on Tumblr they used to say "LGBT spaces" were ace-exclusive if people were allowed to kiss.

i would have thought it was ACE inclusive if everyone present DID encourage the ACES to regularly share how hard it was to be ACE. and also if everyone present listened intently and then went home and wrote poems about it afterward.

OMG, Kate, this edition is sensational! I loved your observation: “Believers often tell us that everyone has pronouns, but I’ll note as a gender atheist that no, everyone uses pronouns.” Your whole disquisition on pronouns, capped with that priceless video (which I had not seen) was hilarious. As to whether the video is satire, or simply a reflection of our current state: these days, for sure, give new meaning to the phrase, “you couldn’t make this up.” (Exhibit A for this week, in that regard, might just have to be Roxanne Gay’s “advice” column.) Anyway, thank you not only for bringing us the news, but also lacing it with plenty of acerbic wit. You are a treasure!

Oh, and let me not neglect to add: way to go, Martina!

Thank you, and thank you for the great tips!

My husband was recently in a work meeting where pronouns were requested, and he said, "My pronouns are you and I." He gets away with such impertinence because he's more than twice the age of most of his colleagues. And he's a man.

Well, considering a preposition is anything you can do to a rainbow, does Pride Month count?

Excellent roundup on theme, thank you.

Mandating the pronouns that other persons are to use is "compelled speech". The SCOTUS has ruled that "compelled speech" is not legal, under the 1st Amendment. You cannot be mandated to say things.

Refer to yourself anyway that you wish. If you ask me to use specific pronouns, I will be happy to do so:

- $0 for normal pronouns appropriate to your sex

- $10/use for the pronoun of the other sex

- $1000/use for the "singular they"

Have your credit card ready.

Aha! I tried to make a funny sketch called They’re on First a few years ago that was more lighthearted than overtly critical, back when I still had hope for the “queer community”. Maybe y’all will enjoy: https://youtu.be/krFaF31uTRM?si=GRKr5-tnmF_aI8w4

"India does now allow same-sex marriage in normal circumstances." Is that supposed to be "not" rather than "now"?

Oops, yep! Will correct.

Dealing with the pronoun issue is simple.

Why Pronouns exist in English at all is puzzling.

In professional settings including writing I either repeat the name of the person or use “the person” instead of a pronoun. Its clearer than the pronoun alternative.

At work my pronoun is “the person.”

I believe national pronoun day is useful in understanding the sensitivities.

Anyone who ridicules it is either an inflamer or insensitive.

I do agree that any laws that make misgendering a form of harassment are at odds in the divided states at least with the first amendment. CA has made some laws that if legally challenged will be overturned by the federal courts. Those laws are only there in CA because of democrats pandering to the vocal left. Politicians know they won’t hold up in court.
