And I’m going to add here that I heard Legal present in my ohio children’s hospital regarding the new state ban on gender medicine. My take: they hate the ban but they are terrified of it. They do not want to be in non compliance. Until pediatric gender medicine in the US comes to grip with reality these bans are the best way to go to protect kids.

The Cass review was a much needed publication that gave backing and reinforcement to many people trying to push back, it has started to finally introduce some common sense back into the whole gender medicine debate as it relates to children and adolescents. But it should be the “straw on the cupboard shelf” that another commenter mentioned, one of the most disappointing things that came out after the review was published was that 6/7 clinics refused to provide data for the review, those clinics should now be forced to provide that data and hopefully we can start to see real evidence of the damage we are doing to the next generation.
They probably don't even have the data to provide.
The Tavistock GIDS clinic infamously did little-to-no followup, to the point where it had lost (or so it said) the contact information of a majority of its patients at just 2 years from treatment.
I'm certainly not seeing any good reason to think the adult clinics would have done any better.

I recently discovered that a friend whose daughter has recently managed to desist a bit from a years-long fixation on a trans identity has heard/read absolutely nothing about the Cass Report or the WPATH files. (And how can I blame a widow too busy supporting 3 mentally fragile teens to obsessively read the news about the culture war and this medical scandal like I do?)
The difficult reality is that most people are just too busy and stressed to know (even if the fortunes of those they most care about depend upon the medical system somehow reforming itself).
To make any progress in undoing some of the damage that influential ideologues have already done to our public policy and the processes governing just about everything in our social lives, it seems the most effective motivator is the "ick" response most people will have to an ugly old fat man wearing a dress and lipstick (which we have seen can be overcome by a rush of guilt for having that disgust response in the first place - so many "trans allies," I suspect, are motivated by a need for penance.).
But, the general ignorance and apathy of the vast majority of people are the most powerful allies that the witch doctors benefit from, and I am growing so weary trying to find ways to push back against that. So weary that I'm almost ready to concede lately to those whose tactics I fear triggers an overcorrection, other words a whole society regressing back to a state were we all are constrained once again by the traditional prejudices and prudery that historically forced so much of human self expression into the closet or out to the margins of society.

The theory ascribed to by many (including me) goes: We're social animals because banding together was our first successful tactic (evolutionarily-speaking) for survival. But to get a group of other human beings to be in a band with you, they must perceive you to be valuable and likeable enough to have around. Status is the degree to which others count you as likeable, valuable, and -- if you can be attractive and do or say enough of the things that inspire them to feel high enough levels of admiration and love for you -- irreplaceable. And we're all hopelessly dependant upon having at least a little status, needing it almost as much as food and water and air. And as mentioned above, I am so damn tired of having to re-explain why trans-ing kids is insane to my friends and neighbors. By the time WPATH 8 came out in Sept 2022, *after* this exchange...there was even a comprehensive umbrella review of reviews by Brignardello-Petersen and Wiercioch, who did one for under 21's commissioned by the Florida Health Agency. If they were experts on transgender health, why weren't they even aware of what was being done to evaluate the evidence? These reports weren't secret or anything, they were attacked by a lot of people who advocate for medicalization (but I don't recall seeing any criticisms that made sense, one incorrectly claimed that studies had been left out-sound familiar-another was a personal attack on training of one of the reviewers in another field that was in addition to their extensive training and current professorship in evidence-based medicine, which had nothing to do with anything, it was just spin).

I recently discovered that a friend whose daughter has recently managed to desist a bit from a years-long fixation on a trans identity has heard/read absolutely nothing about the Cass Report or the WPATH files. (And how can I blame a widow too busy supporting 3 mentally fragile teens to obsessively read the news about the culture war and this medical scandal like I do?)
The difficult reality is that most people are just too busy and stressed to know (even if the fortunes of those they most care about depend upon the medical system somehow reforming itself).
To make any progress in undoing some of the damage that influential ideologues have already done to our public policy and the processes governing just about everything in our social lives, it seems the most effective motivator is the "ick" response most people will have to an ugly old fat man wearing a dress and lipstick (which we have seen can be overcome by a rush of guilt for having that disgust response in the first place - so many "trans allies," I suspect, are motivated by a need for penance.).
But, the general ignorance and apathy of the vast majority of people are the most powerful allies that the witch doctors benefit from, and I am growing so weary trying to find ways to push back against that. So weary that I'm almost ready to concede lately to those whose tactics I fear triggers an overcorrection, other words a whole society regressing back to a state were we all are constrained once again by the traditional prejudices and prudery that historically forced so much of human self expression into the closet or out to the margins of society.
Is it just an ugly truth that the human condition makes a "free to be you and me" culture an impossible dream?
So true! I try to carefully approach the topic with female friends and they just are so stuck in a “supportive” mindset. The religious litany is repeated so much in their spaces. All I can try is to ask questions and encourage curiosity.

Until you find that book, may I recommend Will Storr's The Status Game, as a useful way to understand most people's core motivation for doing/saying what they do/say (or, in my case, take the time to post comments in response to Lisa's fantastic work, which is sort of like hitching a ride on her coat tails.)?
The theory ascribed to by many (including me) goes: We're social animals because banding together was our first successful tactic (evolutionarily-speaking) for survival. But to get a group of other human beings to be in a band with you, they must perceive you to be valuable and likeable enough to have around. Status is the degree to which others count you as likeable, valuable, and -- if you can be attractive and do or say enough of the things that inspire them to feel high enough levels of admiration and love for you -- irreplaceable. And we're all hopelessly dependant upon having at least a little status, needing it almost as much as food and water and air. Thanks so much for the info on this book! Like all of you in this subthread, I too have reached the conclusion that human nature is just prewired to go with the flow and conform. And as mentioned above, I am so damn tired of having to re-explain why trans-ing kids is insane to my friends and neighbors. Weeks later, they act as if they heard none of it, even though at the time they expressed shock and dismay. But also as mentioned above, in the U.S. … people are indeed stressed, overworked and struggling and who is going to waste their time thinking about this if they don’t have skin in the game. Yes the over correction could be a real thing that ends up pushing back on the whole of the LGB part of our society. We have made important strides in accepting the gay community as normal people and that ground must not be lost. Even trans people need care and understanding in our community. By the time WPATH 8 came out in Sept 2022, *after* this exchange...there was even a comprehensive umbrella review of reviews by Brignardello-Petersen and Wiercioch, who did one for under 21's commissioned by the Florida Health Agency. If they were experts on transgender health, why weren't they even aware of what was being done to evaluate the evidence? These reports weren't secret or anything, they were attacked by a lot of people who advocate for medicalization (but I don't recall seeing any criticisms that made sense, one incorrectly claimed that studies had been left out-sound familiar-another was a personal attack on training of one of the reviewers in another field that was in addition to their extensive training and current professorship in evidence-based medicine, which had nothing to do with anything, it was just spin).

I am not sure I would call the email damning, but it seems obvious that WPATH has no real incentive or willingness to conduct a thorough systematic review. It will take either governmental pressure or significant pushback from the public to force that to happen. Yes there is definitely a lot of money to be made from the surgeries and the lifelong medication of adolescents and children. Unfortunately that is why it will always be a difficult battle even with the Cass review and everything else that has come out recently. Many of our elites are heavily invested in big pharma so have little motivation to do anything that might ultimately damage their fortunes. More public pressure is perhaps the only thing that will change that.
