Why Aren’t More Queers Banning GENDER QUEER?
It names the most unspeakable idea in all of trans activism
[Take 2]
A few weekends ago, I paid $8 for a copy of Gender Queer in a used bookshop in Williamstown, MA (all proceeds to the town library). While my friends continued browsing, I sat on the sidewalk and read the most banned book in America.
All I knew about this sexuality-and-gender-themed graphic memoir were the pages circulating on social media of a blowjob. Or a blowjob-ish: someone aiming to wrap her/their mouth around a dildo. I was curious to see whether the content warranted the kerfuffle.
My conclusion at the end of it wasn’t: “Why are so many parents upset about this book’s placement in the school library?” It was: “Why aren’t more trans activists outraged that this book exists, and has gotten so much attention and praise? Why aren’t they trying to ban it?”
