What's Happened Since (and Before) 2022?
An overview, at Skeptic
In 2022, Michael Shermer of Skeptic asked me to write an overview of the trans debate, and I’m so glad he did. It was the first time I started to see the full picture of how youth gender medicine started—and what had happened to it in America.
Earlier this year, I asked Shermer if he’d like an update, and he did. The article was published yesterday.
I’ve already gotten an interesting mix of feedback, though much of it suggests I’ve been too generous in my characterizations—too unwilling to, essentially, compare gender doctors to Josef Mengele. But the point of the article is not to inspire outrage. Rather, it is to help those who don’t yet understand what they’ve supported see it better. I am trying to craft off-ramps made of prose.
My hope is that this piece is shareable to those who are asking: “What the hell happened, and why are we battling over this?”
The full answer, of course, requires much more space than an article. More answers to come, in my book, out next year.
Comments are open if you have other answers to this question, or additions, criticisms, suggestions, etc.

Thank you for this resource, and thanks in advance for your book. I’ve already begun sharing this outstanding article with people in my life. Yes, people need off-ramps from this, and I’m so grateful for your ramp-building ability.
Thanks so much, Lisa.
Yes, the point of your piece wasn't to preach to the choir.
In appreciation, for all you do.
A big thanks to Michael Shermer too.
