Somehow a Manhattan Institute Fellow and a transsexual activist found themselves at a liberal college debating youth gender medicine. Good on Middlebury for hosting. Good on the irate nonbinary students for attending—even if they came armed to fight, not to listen.
And good on Leor Sapir, for this excellent definition of sex, gender, and gender identity. May it be folded into every lesson in the land on gender identity.
Is the whole video of his talk somewhere that can be found?? Would love to watch it.
I watched the whole video and found that Wu and Sapir had a remarkably thoughtful and congenial discussion. They had broad areas of strong agreement and an intelligent exchange on their disagreements. I wouldn’t characterize this interaction as a debate, but rather a thoughtful exchange between two people who have pondered the matter long and hard. The trans community would do itself a service by adopting Wu’s reasoned and reasonable views and approaches. It was refreshing to hear her come down so firmly against medical transitioning for young children. She did not convince me, however, that medically transitioning at 14 or 15 can be justified.
