I, too, wish there was a clearinghouse for news and information. For me, that used to be Ovarit. Now I feel like I subscribe to dozens of emails, newsletters and Substacks. I could spend a couple hours a day reading through them. It's too much!
I love Informed Dissent! I just noticed a post from Leanne Owen:
"Good morning, and welcome back! After a month-long pause, the Informed Dissent newsletter is relaunching—and I’m honored to be writing it. I’m LeAnne Owen, taking over from Ben Appel. Every Friday you’ll get compelling, curated coverage of the gender wars: what’s happening, what matters, and what you need to know.
The Informed Dissent podcast is coming back too. Tomorrow, Saturday, October 4, Jamie Reed will introduce our new co-host, Lauren Leggieri, in a special episode. Then on Saturday, October 11, the podcast relaunches in full, with Jamie, Lauren, and Cori Cohn together."
I will miss seeing Ben, Lisa and Sarah. But, I am sure the new podcast will be worth a listen.
If you need nature, hop on the Metro North Hudson line and ride up through the Hudson Valley along the River. There are so many places along the route with Riverfront parks, hiking areas, historic sites, etc. Especially as we move into fall and the leaves start turning.
Thanks for the music recommendation, Lisa! I thought you might enjoy this band (if you don't already know it, I think you said your dad is a folk musician): https://youtu.be/yeFcUbGW1gA
I also miss LA (I went to grad school not far from it). It always felt like a bit of a different planet to me (coming from Europe), but I agree the flora is amazing.
I loved that you started by highlighting the DIAG/MA4Women initiative in MA. The volunteers involved have done amazing work here. I loved, too, that you closed with those gorgeous nature(!) photos of LA and that cute little dog. When it comes to nature, I hope you are able, while in Hudson, to have time to go to Olana, which is only a few miles away. The views out over the Hudson are spectacular. I am so sorry that I can’t join in on the meetup, and I do hope this won’t be the last. https://olana.org/
It'd be great if Ben, Sarah, and Lisa could drop in every so often. I really did enjoy the conversations they had. I could've lived with a rotating line up of hosts if scheduling was becoming an issue.
Thank you, Lisa, for the gender news and the recommendations. Grateful for your labors. For New Yorkers, I'll recommend the soon-to-open Ruth Asawa show at MoMA. I'm in SF, where it first opened and went many times. Asawa was a force, and the show offers a calm, awe-inspiring place - a little like being in nature inside.
Dignity Health, a Catholic company, will not allow abortions or tubal ligations to be performed at their facilities. At the same time they host GCC at St. Francis Hospital in San Francisco.
Yep, the ideological capture of even more conservative religious denominations (at least in SF) is curious/alarming. I just attended high holiday services at a Conservative Jewish synagogue, which flies two flags in its courtyard: Israeli and pride progress. That's a lot to unpack!
The first detransitioner lawsuit in Israel was initiated by a female who had a double mastectomy at age 17, a year too young, according to their medical protocols. She states in the lawsuit that she started identifying out of her female biology after a sexual assault in her early teens, the trauma was not addressed. The doctor named in the suit claims that age 18 only applies to genital surgery on the groins of patients. The woman is now in her early twenties and says she deals with all the permanent results of years of testosterone as well as the loss of her breasts and is in a traumatized state on a daily basis. The article was in ynet global, an English language Israeli news outlet.
I would consider attending the DIAG event, which is only an hour away from where I live in the Hudson Valley, but I don't want to subject myself to the typical liberal stance still persisting among Dem affiliated New Yorkers, that I should have tolerated my ex husband's demands to be named "mother" to my sons along with me, because that's how I could have kept the peace. I'd have to drag out my data about the violence these demanding men commit on their wives, now 39% for sexual assaults and 38% for physical assaults with 74 trans widows' testimonies.
A window into this violence from just one trans widow:

I didn't realize it was a permanent closure. What happened?

I really enjoyed the different takes everyone had
The Adirondacks in September: quiet, no bugs, clear glassy lakes, fall colors, deep blue skies, full moon rising.

Oh, is Sammy a Bichon Frisé? My family had one (Mattie, because of the state of her hair when we found her). They are lovely dogs!
