Wait, it’s Friday? This week, I was so busy writing about how and why most news outlets failed so spectacularly to cover gender affirming care and trans kids well, I hardly noticed what was happening now. I looked at New York Times stories from over 10 years ago, which used language like “a boy, identifying as a girl,” and at recent stories, which may say “trans girl” or just “girl.”
Then I thought about this recent news story, shared by Ben Appel on Twitter:
It’s about a teenager—clearly male—who identifies as female, and who has encountered “hate” from a local mom. What hateful thing did that mom say?
She said that the high school was allowing a male who identifies as female to be in and change in the girls’ locker room, while the girls are there. The “hate” she expressed? Stating facts.
So much about the set of gender beliefs we sometimes refer to as “gender ideology” is rooted in supernatural ideas about language: that to speak about gender identity as the overarching truth makes it so—and thus, to speak the actual truth is to break the spell. The fact that this reporter a) found this story newsworthy and b) accepted the spell as reality—reinforced the spell—is a sign of how much the media has woven these supernatural beliefs into everyday practice.
More on how that happened coming soon.
In the meantime, Alejandra Q is back with summaries and headlines! Phew!

New Hampshire’s House Bill 1205 (known as Fairness in Women’s Sports) passed both of the state’s legislative houses and is now at Governor Chris Sununu’s desk. The measure would ban males in grades 5 to 12 from participating in female sports. This comes after Maelle Jacques, a trans-identified male high school athlete, has accumulated multiple titles in girls’ high school track. Several protestors against the legislature gathered Wednesday at the New Hampshire State House.
South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster signed the ‘Help Not Harm’ bill into law Wednesday. The legislature will disallow any healthcare professionals from providing “gender affirming” interventions to patients under 18.
Ohio Supreme Court rejected Attorney General Dave Yost’s request to overturn a temporary restraining order preventing HB 68 from going into effect. HB 68 would ban both “gender affirming” interventions and trans-identified males from female sports. On April 16, Judge Michael Holbrook of Franklin County’s Common Pleas Court ruled that HB 68 violated the Ohio single-subject rule.
Alabama’s Attorney General Steve Marshall filed a motion to uphold the state’s 2022 Vulnerable Child Compassion and Protection Act (VCAP), which bans transgender surgery in the state. While the law went into effect in May 2022, it was blocked a few days later by U.S. District Judge Liles Burke.
The U.S. Supreme Court declined to review an appeal by three Maryland parents challenging their school district’s policy regarding transgender “support plans.” 2020 school guidelines for their district allow for “support plans” that affirm students’ gender identities in school.
Parents Defending Education has released incriminating emails concerning a healthcare organization working within Seattle Public Schools that offers students cross-sex hormones and other forms of “gender-affirming” interventions. The health program, Neighborcare Health (which planned to offer services through "a small pilot available to students and families"), operates inside public middle and elementary schools.
Ohio Democratic lawmakers are challenging a state law requiring candidates for public office to disclose any legal name changes from the past 5 years. Two trans-identified candidates, Bobbie Brooke Arnold and Arienne Childrey, will appear in the ballot this fall, while a third candidate, Vanessa Joy, was disqualified for failing to list a legal name. The three candidates testified before Ohio’s House Government Oversight Committee Tuesday in favor of a bill that would exempt them from having to disclose legal name changes.
The California ballot initiative originally known as the “Protect California Kids Act” failed to qualify for California’s November ballot after not getting enough signatures in support. The proposal would have notified parents of name or pronoun changes in school and barred health care professionals from transitioning minors. While the campaign gathered 400,000 signatures, a measure needs half a million signatures to qualify for the ballot. According to Jonathan Zachreson, who led the initiative, “If we had a little more time and a little more money, we would have easily qualified for the ballot.” Meanwhile, California legislators voted to approve AB 1955, a bill which would ban districts from passing parental notification policies concerning students who change their gender status in school. According to the sponsor of the bill, San Diego Democratic Assemblyman Chris Ward, “forced outings” add to the “suffering and the challenges that LGBTQ youth are feeling.”
Aayden Gallagher, a trans-identified male student athlete at McDaniel High School, won the 200-meter race at the Oregon Girls’ 6A finals, leading to booing from those viewing the event. In a similar incident, Veronica Garcia, another trans-identified male high school athlete, won the 400-meter dash at the Washington State Championship on Saturday. Garcia, who won the race a full second ahead of the closest rival, is a student at East Valley School District in Spokane. While some in the crowd cheered when Garcia crossed the finish line, boos and cheering broke out as Garcia ascended the podium, while the female participants stood stoically in protest. Riley Gaines criticized Garcia’s victory, stating on X, “Had he ran with the boys, he wouldn’t have even managed 16th place.”

Attorneys for the plaintiffs supported pushing the trial back for a multitude of reasons including similar lawsuits making their way through the courts in other states. The journal is also accused of rejecting a paper by Dr. John Armstrong over his posting in social media in support of JK Rowling. Progress for the left means the erasure of women and mothers.” Gascón’s lawyer has filed a legal complaint against Maréchal for “sexist insult on the basis of gender identity”.
Medical experts appear to be unwilling to give evidence in cases concerning gender issues, with courts struggling to find experts to testify in family law disputes dealing with minors who want hormonal interventions. Judges in two UK High Court rulings this month highlighted the lack of medical experts willing to provide evidence. One judge noted that, “There are few other areas of healthcare where professionals are so afraid to openly discuss their views, where people are vilified on social media, and where name-calling echoes the worst bullying behavior.”

Well, that was a depressing read. Sad to hear about Protect Kids CA. People worked really hard to make that happen. Thanks to everyone for giving it your all for our kids. We have two more weeks living in the US, I’m so done with all of it. These farewell conversations with my friends are depressing … they really just can’t believe I will move our family out of this country because it’s so bad and I want to give my daughter a chance at a normal life. They just have no idea what we’ve been through even after telling them. They don’t believe me! Busting into our meeting at an eating clinic to demand we give our girl T, constantly having the pediatrician try to send her to the gender clinic to wash their hands of her, ‘not my problem!’, and let’s not even talk about attending university here or what you see walking into the public library. Nuts. All of it.
Is it my imagination or are the number of news articles about gender wars increasing?
Or is this a particularly busy week? Or catching up? Or maybe I just feel overwhelmed and can’t get through it anymore…..
